Lower running costs
While EVs are usually more expensive to purchase in the first instance, the long-term financial benefits far outweigh those of a combustion-engine vehicle. With zero fuel to purchase, the running costs are significantly reduced and although you will have to pay for the electricity to charge the vehicle, this can work out at less than 4p per mile, compared to around 19p per mile for a petrol-engine car.

Lower maintenance costs
In an ordinary petrol or diesel car the piston engine has over 450 moving parts. It is prone to breakdown and requires regular servicing, which is expensive. On an electric car, the motors and batteries need no maintenance. There is no exhaust, no fuel tank or lines to get blocked, no air or oil filters, no service required on the engine and, due to regenerative braking, considerably less wear on the brakes. All of this means that you will spend far less money on maintenance of your car and far less time in the garage.

Pay less tax
Vehicle Excise Duty in the UK is based on CO2 emissions. As electric cars have no exhaust, and no emissions, they qualify for free road tax. EVs also qualify for the cheapest band of company car tax, which is also based on emissions.

Parking and congestion charge discounts
Electric vehicles currently receive a number of parking concessions with discounts up to 100% for car parks, metered bay parking and residential and business parking permits across the UK. In London, EVs are classed as alternative fuelled vehicles and are therefore exempt from the London Congestion Charge.
